Designing your Website

Designing a web site, easy, everyone can do it, right;  TRUE or FALSE ?
This statement is probably false but can be true if you meet a whole host of requirements and conditions to make it true. 

Putting together a website is one of those things that should be left to a professional.

These are just a few of the things you will need to come to grips with when designing a website
  • Firstly, you need an understanding of the language and terminology
  • You will need the tools to start, something like a WYSIWYG type editor is usually where most people start (Look at spending approx AU$400 for a reasonable one)
  • Visual creativity is another good attribute if you want your site to stand out from the rest or if it is a personal style homepage, a pre-drawn template may be the way to go
  • For your site to be seen you will need to understand how to list your site with the search engines, how to design your site so it is search engine friendly, how to get your meta tags right, how to link to other sites
  • Once created, will your site be visible on ALL different browsers ? IE4, IE5, IE6, Netscape 4,5,6,7, Firebird, Avant, IBM’s, Macs and the list goes on. You see all these browsers and operating systems work under different rules, you will need to understand these rules to make your site successful
  • How often will the site need to be updated ?
    Who will do the updates ?
    How easy is the site to change ?
    Have you made it Static or is it Dynamic?
    Is it CSS based?
  • Will the site need to use databases?
  • Will the pages be HTM, HTML, ASP, PHP …..
  • Can your web host handle the site how you have created it ?
  • Then you will need weeks/months to get it all together
These are a small sample of the questions you must ask to make the first statement above TRUE and there are plenty more to ask. The internet is a very changing medium and you also need to keep up to date with these changes.
