It’s an interesting question, and one that I hear often. How much does a website cost? Let me answer that with another question.

How long is a piece of string?

You see it’s one of those questions that can have many answers. The idea is to ask the right questions, such as:

Do you want a one page “Here I Am” website?

Do you want to be able to sell widgets to the world through your site?

Do you want to showcase your products and services?

Do you want a site where your customers can come and chat about your products?

Do you want a site that does all of the above?

Setting up a website for your business is not as simple as putting a page on the World Wide Web and then raking in the money, if it was we would all be sitting on a beach being waited on hand and foot. A website is like any other part of your business, you get back what you are willing to put into it.

Of course that doesn’t mean you have to run out and spend $10,000 dollars on a website, but you do have to think about what you want from a website before you can get some idea of how much it will cost. Let’s take a look at the different types of websites there are and what will suit your business best.

The “Here I Am” website.

Quite often this is a site that just has the bare essentials. It has your business name, contact information and where you are. The website address is typically the name of your business, such as www.bobswidgets.com.au. The sole purpose of this site is to let people know where you are and how to get hold of you. These people already know your business exists and what the name of your business is and will usually find you by typing in your web address into their browser or into Google directly. Think of it as a simple three line ad in the Yellow Pages.

This is generally the cheapest website you can have but also the one that will do the least amount of work for you.

The “This is What I Do” website.

This website generally contains your business name, logo, address and contact details, as well as information about the services or goods that you provide and some background information about your business. You will have photos of your products and maybe some testimonials from satisfied clients as well as detailed information about your goods and services and possibly some pricing as well.

This site is for people that are looking for a business like yours, possibly in the area that you service, but don’t know about you directly. Think of it as a glossy colour brochure or a full page ad in the Yellow Pages or local paper.

This site will cost you a bit more than the cheapest site but will help you to get new customers through the door.

The “Buy My Product” website.

If you have products you want to sell online then this is the website you should have. It should include all the information that you would normally find in the “This is What I Do” website plus people can order and pay for your products online.

This site is for people that want to purchase your goods directly from you, from your local region, interstate and possibly overseas. Your site will contain all your products with pricing which you keep up to date using an administration section which can also help you keep track of sales. Think of this site as your shop front but on the busiest street in the world, the World Wide Web.

You will be spending a lot more money for a site like this but it’s the equivalent of opening a new shop that has the potential to get you far more customers than your bricks and mortar shop.

The “Be a Part of Our Community” website.

This site is more about creating a community than just getting people to buy from you then move on. Your customers will not only be able to buy your products but also chat to other customers, review your product for others to see and possibly even encourage others to join in. Building a sense of community encourages customer loyalty which means repeat sales, something every business wants to achieve.

Think of this business as a club where people come to chat and meet, as well as buy your products while they’re there.

This is generally the most expensive site as it involves social networking, discussion boards and links to sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

Summary

Well there’s a bit of a guide on how different websites cost different amounts of money, it all depends on what you want to achieve. If you want to talk about this some more then feel free to contact us and we will be more than happy to discuss with you how much your website will cost.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is one of those things that no website that’s serious about ranking can ignore. It’s seen as somewhat of a black art but the basic techniques are really very simple to accomplish.

Essentially there are two things you must keep in mind when setting up your SEO on your website. Content is King and Live by the Link. Let’s break these two down a bit.

Content is King

Content is the information in your website that is easily read by search engine bots (those curious little programs that scurry around the Internet gathering information). This means text, pure and simple. That’s bad news for full Flash sites I’m afraid. While the major search engines like Google are starting to read Flash files there is a lot of superfluous coding inside them that makes it very difficult to extract meaningful information. Images, while great to have on your site, contribute little to your rankings. You can do small things with images, such as changing the file name to something relevant (e.g. seo.jpg) and using the title and alt tags (e.g. alt=”this is an image showing search engine optimisation in action”) but that’s about it.

Now, if you want to rank highly you must have plenty of text on your site. It also has to be relevant text. If you have a website devoted to the nuances of Bonsai gardening then it’s not much use having pages and pages of information on your favourite football teams quest for the finals.

It also helps if the text you have on your website is something people on other websites are going to link to, which brings us neatly to…

Live by the Link

Relevant text, and lots of it, is great for helping your rankings, but people have to get to your site in order to read it, and that’s where links come in. The text in the link is also very important. The text of the link tell the search engine what it should expect to find when it follows the link, so having a link that says “How to grow Bonsai” is much better than “Click Here”.

But how do you get people to link to your site? Well there’s the simplest method which is ask other websites to exchange links with you. That’s where you put a link on your site to their site, and they put a link on their site pointing to your site. If you have friends that have web pages then ask them first. If you have friends that have high ranking websites then that’s even better. Links from high ranking websites is better than links from low ranking sites.

Now I know what you’re thinking here. This is all well and good but I don’t have time to do all this work, I have a business to run. Why can’t I just hire someone to do it for me?

Getting someone to do it for you.

Hiring someone to optimize your site is a good idea, but be careful. SEO is something that not many people understand, and there are a lot of people out there claiming to be “SEO Experts“.

So how can you tell if they can do what they say they can do?

There are some things you need to remember when deciding on who you get to do your SEO.

If someone claims they can get you to the top of Google for certain keywords then make sure you know what those keywords are. Getting to the top for “Bansai By Bruce” is great if your business is called “Bonsai By Bruce” but is that what people will be searching for? If they already know you exist then are sure to find your website address, but what about people who just want to find a business that deals with Bonsai? You can be guaranteed they will be searching for “Bonsai” or “Bonsai Gardening” or a host of other terms that your site isn’t optimised for.

Proper Search Engine Optimisation is not a “Set and Forget” mentality. You can fill your site with relevant text, get those important relevant external links to your site and you will probably start to rank quite highly, but it won’t last. Your content has to remain relevant and that means the text has to be updated, the links have to increase, the search bots have to know that your website is keeping up with the times. Be very wary of “SEO Experts” that claim they can get your site to rank highly with no mention of future updates or keeping your website information up to date.

The absolute best, no fail way of telling if your chosen SEO Expert can do what he says he can do is to search on Google. Now in all fairness SEO is a competitive industry, so don’t think that because your expert doesn’t rank one or two for a search for “Search Engine Optimisation” then they are a waste of time, but it would be nice if they ranked in the first couple of pages. Another way is to use locality for your search. Say for example you live on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The you would do a search similar to “Search Engine Optimisation Sunshine Coast” which should show you all the local SEO consultants. Is your expert one of them?

I hope this post has helped you to decide on how you go about optimising your site to rank highly on Search Engines, or at least given you some tips on who you should choose to do it for you. I personally know of some companies charging nearly $1000.00 for what I just told you so you’re ahead already.

Designing a web site, easy, everyone can do it, right; TRUE or FALSE ?

This statement is probably false but can be true if you meet a whole host of requirements and conditions to make it true.

Putting together a website is one of those things that should be left to a professional.

These are just a few of the things you will need to come to grips with when designing a website

Firstly, you need an understanding of the language and terminology

You will need the tools to start, something like a WYSIWYG type editor is usually where most people start (Look at spending approx AU$400 for a reasonable one)

Visual creativity is another good attribute if you want your site to stand out from the rest or if it is a personal style homepage, a pre-drawn template may be the way to go

For your site to be seen you will need to understand how to list your site with the search engines, how to design your site so it is search engine friendly, how to get your meta tags right, how to link to other sites

Once created, will your site be visible on ALL different browsers ? IE4, IE5, IE6, Netscape 4,5,6,7, Firebird, Avant, IBM’s, Macs and the list goes on. You see all these browsers and operating systems work under different rules, you will need to understand these rules to make your site successful

How often will the site need to be updated ?
Who will do the updates ?
How easy is the site to change ?
Have you made it Static or is it Dynamic?
Is it CSS based?

Will the site need to use databases?

Will the pages be HTM, HTML, ASP, PHP …..

Can your web host handle the site how you have created it ?

Then you will need weeks/months to get it all together

These are a small sample of the questions you must ask to make the first statement above TRUE and there are plenty more to ask. The internet is a very changing medium and you also need to keep up to date with these changes.

Net Exposure Australia has been building web sites since 1995 and working in the computer industry since 1983, we have probably come across most situations when designing a website and know how to make your site successful.

To the left you will see a menu of the important parts of designing a site, please have a read and if you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask.

Domain Names, URL or www….

You have all probably heard the expressions, however what are they?

About Domain Names:

This is a name similar to the registration name of your company or business, or probably a better desription would be that your Domain Name is your internet Phone Number. All domain names are unique.

Domain names are the way people find a web site on the internet.

When someone enters in an address like www.domainname.com, the browser they are using searches through the many registries around the world for that ‘Domain Name’, finds all the information about where to locate the web site or mail information and then sends the person to the correct place to display the web site. All this happens in the blink of an eye and it is all done with the Domain Name. Domain Names are unique and can not be duplicated.

Domain Name Extensions:

Did you know that domain names are being registered at the rate of more than 30,000 per day?
As stated earlier, Domain Names are unique, so reserving your name domain now will secure it before someone else registers it.

Domain names come with different Extensions and Domain Name Extensions are designed to reflect the type of organisation you would like to represent. Apart from the way they look, they work exactly the same.

Just like your business name, the name you choose is particularly important, as this is the name that you will use for all advertising or promotion of your web address and your new email addresses. e.g.. someone@yourcompany.com

Good Reasons to get a Domain Name
